Although the volume comprises distinct sections of biography, history and criticism, the three are intermingled throughout. ![]() Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet might have looked like. ![]() Color illustrations and maps provide further illumination, particularly the portraits suggesting what beloved characters such as Mr. She provides just that by weaving together carefully researched biographical information, meticulously detailed descriptions of everything from social hierarchy to cosmetics and sanitation, as well as summaries of and contemporary reactions to Austen's novels. ![]() Nearly 200 years later, many praise what Austen scholar (and obvious fan) Le Faye calls her ability to create the ""sensation that we are visiting genuine places and joining in the lives of genuine people."" Le Faye (Jane Austen: A Family Record) argues that modern readers need a thorough explanation of Austen's milieu-Georgian and Regency Britain-in order to fully understand and enjoy her fiction. When Jane Austen's novels were published, some readers dismissed them as ""too natural to be interesting."" Yet their very true-to-lifeness helped earn Austen (1775-1817) her place in the literary canon. ![]() 5/23/2023 0 Comments At Your Pleasure by Meredith Duran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When George of Hanover was crowned king of England, instead of James Stuart, many of Britain’s Tories joined the Jacobite cause, including the family of our heroine. Questions about each other, about how God wants us to approach situations, about our own values – these questions flow naturally when we choose the right books. Reading as a family creates a time for children to be physically close with parents and siblings but also address important topics that might not come up inside the home apart from reading books together. But when we take that extra step with kids, when we are intentional about what we put in front of them and what it means to them as they develop their sense of who they are in the world, we show them windows into other people's worlds and mirrors of who they are.Īgain, when it comes to reading with kids, the most important thing is also the simplest: just do it. ![]() If you’re going to choose between reading as a family and not reading as a family, choose reading. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments The leopard jo nesbo![]() ![]() He’s found by Kaja Solness, an attractive detective who’s come to bring him back to Oslo to pursue a new serial killer, the one whose handiwork we saw in the opening pages. He has fled Norway, and we catch up with him in Hong Kong, living in a flophouse, smoking opium and dodging gangsters who seek to collect on his gambling debts. “The Leopard” is a sequel to Nesbo’s recent “The Snowman,” in which Hole’s pursuit of a serial killer left him shattered in body and spirit. Gentle souls, bless them, will throw the book down in disgust, but countless others will push on, lusting for more cheap thrills. This is a brilliant scene, in its way, but it’s also stunningly sadistic, both in terms of what the killer is doing to the woman and what the author is doing to the reader. As we watch, this device inflicts a terrible death on her. A young woman - captive, confused, desperate - is in the grip of a fiendish instrument of torture. The novel opens with a four-page exercise in horror. ![]() ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Lydia denworth books![]() ![]() And we think of friends as this lovely thing - but it is actually a matter of life and death.
